Waterproof or Water-resistant
What's the difference?

Both terms refer to a material that can protect against or repel water, yet they are still different.

With a waterproof material, water will not penetrate the flooring, no matter how long it sits there. It is usually more expensive. It can be installed in any room. It stops moisture from the air or flooding from penetrating the flooring material.

A water-resistant floor protects the base of the flooring from water penetration. It is usually cheaper and easy to lay in any room. It has the highest wear class (AC5). It comes in a variety of natural-looking colours.

In 2020, NALFA announced that it certifies manufacturers and products that have passed their new "NALFA Water-Resistance Test".

The NALFA water-resistance certificate sets a standard and lets you recognise, via the sticker, laminate that genuinely stands up to water.
